Brazil: Rio de Janeiro Carnival brings Amazon rainforest to the streets

Rio de Janeiro’s vibrant and energetic Carnival has returned for 2024, with floats and performances celebrating the Amazon rainforest and the indigenous communities of Brazil.

Six of Rio’s prime samba colleges paraded down the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí on Sunday night.

One samba college paid tribute to the nation’s largest Indigenous group, the Yanomami, and the Amazon rainforest throughout its parade.

Salgueiro college additionally paid homage to British journalist Dom Phillips and local Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira. who had been killed within the Amazon in 2022.

Dom Phillips’ spouse, Alessandra Soares, additionally took half within the parade.
